Miriam Margolyes, known for playing Professor Sprout, the herbology specialist in the “Harry Potter” films, recently stated that she is considering assisted death to avoid going through a period of “pain and embarrassment.”
The 84-year-old actress, who has always spoken openly about the health problems she has faced for years – including spinal stenosis and osteoporosis – revealed in an interview with Weekend Magazine that she is considering seeking medical help to die, should she lose the ability to live independently.
“I don’t want to go through a period of pain and embarrassment that slowly diminishes me,” she said. “If a stroke prevented me from speaking, or if I had double incontinence, or if I completely lost my mind, I would ask to be put down through medically assisted death.”
Margolyes was honest in explaining the reason for her choice: “It’s because I want to be who I am. I don’t want to be less than I can be.”
